Work out the price per record
Divide the price, including postage, by the number of records. On 30 October 2026, listed lots ranged from:
- 20 pop and rock LPs from the 1960s to the 1980s, graded G to VG+, for £29.95, about £1.50 a record.
- 50 mixed LPs of pop, rock, oldies and easy listening for £18.99, under 40p a record.
- 50 disco 12-inch singles from the 1970s and 1980s for £75, or £1.50 each.
- 500 LPs from a house clearance for £250, 50p a record, collection only.
As a rough guide, mixed lots of common records sell for 50p to £2 a record. Lots by genre, or with a few named albums on show, sell for more. New and sealed bundles cost more again, typically £3 to £5 a record.
Signs of a good job lot
- The contents are listed. Sellers who name every record have nothing to hide. A photo of the spines does the same job.
- Condition is stated. Look for a grade range, such as G to VG+, and photos of a few discs out of their sleeves.
- The lot has a theme. A genre or decade lot was probably one person's collection. A random mix is often what was left after the good records were sold.
- The postage makes sense. 50 LPs weigh around 12kg, so postage of £15 or more is normal. Collection only can be a bargain if the seller is near you.
Red flags
- "Surprise box" or "random pick" with no list and no photos. Expect the records nobody else wanted.
- Only sleeves in the photos. Ask to see the vinyl. Empty or swapped sleeves are common.
- Lots of the same budget labels. 1970s compilation and easy listening albums turn up in almost every lot and rarely sell on.
- Postage charged per record. Some sellers quote postage per item, which can double the cost of a big lot.
Other places to buy in bulk
House clearances and record fairs at the end of the day both sell boxes of records cheaply. Job lot questions
Are vinyl job lots worth it?
They can be, especially if you want to build a collection quickly or resell records. Lots with listed contents and stated condition are far safer than mystery boxes.
How much should I pay per record in a job lot?
Mixed lots of common records usually work out at 50p to £2 a record including postage. Pay more only for lots with named albums or a clear genre theme.
Can I resell records from a job lot?
Yes, and many dealers stock up this way. Listing records one at a time takes time, so tools that copy your listings across selling sites help. Our guide to listing Discogs inventory on eBay explains how.
How do I clean records from a job lot?
Start with a carbon fibre brush for dust. For grime from a loft or garage, use a record cleaning fluid and a microfibre cloth, and let the records dry fully before putting them back in their sleeves.
